Birkenkopf - Rubble Hill

After going to the market we set off to Birkenkopf. Birkenkopf is an artificial hill built from the ruins of WW II in Stuttgart. Between 1953 and 1957 rubble from 53 bombings were built on top of the hill which resulted in an increase of 40 meters! There is a plaque at the top of the hill that translates to: "This mountain was built after the 2nd World War from the rubble of the town to stand as a memorial of the dead and a warning to the living".

The kids loved the hike up and the views were beautiful.

This steel cross was put up in 2003 to replace the wooden one that was placed there in 1953.
